It will also be appropriate to choose the type of carpet under the use it will provide. If you were born during the post-war, you might be accustomed to carpets made from polyester.

Polyester is not as durable as other fibers, but it’s still tough enough to wear, and offers a wide variety of textures and colors. Although it is susceptible to compaction and wear, hypoallergenic, repels moisture, fungi and resists the action of the moths, and is easily cleaned.

Today, nylon is the most common material in carpets, and is the strongest fiber, making it ideal for high traffic areas. It is also the most durable of the synthetics, and easier to clean and maintain.Nylon is resistant to mildew and dirt, resilient and hypoallergenic. In some types of nylon can be produced caking and buildup of static electricity. It usually occurs in light colors. Almost all dark colors are more expensive due to the large amount of dye used in production.

For its part, wool provides a rich and dense appearance, is elastic to the touch and durable. Although in itself repels stains, requires little maintenance, including anti-moth treatment.

The acrylic synthetic fiber is more similar to wool. It is made especially for commercial use. Resists dirt, static buildup, the moth and mildew, and is easy to clean. It has a wide variety of colors, and exposed to sunlight fades less than nylon or polyester.

The olefin (polypropylene) was designed at first for rugs placed outdoors and in basements, due to its resistance to moisture, mold, water damage, stains, matting, wear and static electricity.

Currently its use is widespread because of its durability, appearance and texture similar to wool. Olefin is dyed before weave, so their colors are unchanged. Some types of olefin tend to dull and discolor when exposed to direct sunlight.
